The population is over 115,000 and comprised of descendants of many European countries as well as native Americans. It is a very a pretty city with a lovely downtown square surrounded by attractive baroque buildings. Many outdoor oriented tourists come here on their way to either Antartica or Tierro del Fuego. The Chilean navy has a major base here. The Nao Victoria Museum exhibits a full-size replica of the first ship ever to circumnavigate the world: Ferdinand Magellan's ship replica Nao Victoria. University of Magallanes (UMAG) is a university located here.

What Is Special about Punta arenas

For people who love the outdoors and want to live in Chile Punta Arenas could be an interesting choice because of its proximity to Tierra del Fuego.  Chile is a relatively stable country with a strong economy. much less volatile than neighboring Argentina, for example. The Dreams Hotel & Casino is an extremely ambitious luxurious hotel on the harbor - it is very impressive. The downtown square is lovely. Dogs run free in town - some say you can tell the state of the economy by assessing the appearance of the local dogs.
